Sauber make us all look stupid

We were all convinced this car was going to be light blue. Convinced.

Instead… it’s last year’s car with a couple of Telmex logos on it.

Alright, so they’ve changed the nose pattern a bit. But come on. It’s still rubbish. It still looks like an early-90s back-of-the-grid outfit. None of the sponsor logos are in any way integrated with the livery – they’re just there, in whatever original colours they happen to be. The livery doesn’t give any sort of comprehensive team identity – it’s just a hangover from the BMW days, altered slightly. You have to wonder whether anyone at the team actually cares about what their car looks like. Terribly shoddy effort.

What a disaster. I’m hoping that this is only a provisional livery, but the fact that they’ve bothered tinkering with the nose pattern and front wing suggests not.

Aside from the main white and black they have sponsors logo’s in light blue, dark blue, yellow and red. The latter just doesn’t seem right on a Sauber, they’ve never really had any red on their cars since they entered F1 back in 1993

In short, an early contender for worst livery of the decade

Personally, I like the head on shot of the front – the red on the front wing, and the nose with a redsplash, accented by metallic grey, very nice. But then don’t zoom out and show the blue bits near the endplates, and the rest of the car. Also, I now realize that Sauber probably got inspiration for that bit from the early HRT livery …

I had read earlier this month that Peter Sauber actually liked the 2010 livery, so didn’t want to change too much – so that considerably lowered my expectations. To be honest, I feared it would be something like this. So not such a great letdown as it otherwise would have been.

I guess it is good that the unexpectedly the Mercedes livery is at least better than it was; we can’t expect much from Williams, and this livery is a big missed opportunity.

Well I heard that the new Williams livery is going to be “retro”. Something to look forward to?

Either way this livery isn’t any good. Wasn’t good last year and isn’t good this year.

Oh come on, Sauber! I am so disappointed now. I had no idea that when Peter Sauber said “I hope we can put some more colour on the car”, this is what he meant…

Disappointing, and it seems that the Pirelli logo on the tyres is always going to be straight-on — it just doesn’t look right, especially when the PZero logo curves round.

      January 31, 2011 at 4:35 pm

True, but at least it means they can incorporate their iconic elongated ‘P’

    January 31, 2011 at 3:57 pm

truth be told sauber never had a distinctive livery of its own…the initial 93 cars were just black, then followed by a hodge podge of sponsors in 94…for 10 years it had red bull colours and even after red bull left it continued with red bull colours…so after bmw left, they continued this strategy albeit with a bmw-esque livery…sauber probably never had a livery of its own and never would in my honest opinion

1996- 2005 were more Petronas colours than Red Bull, turquoise is their corporate colours. It was a bit of a polariser, but I loved it because it was so colourful and exciting- unlike today’s monstrosity. Definitely one of my favourite liveries of all time

Vert, news of a new livery for Williams is good news. Although I am not really enthusiastic about things going too much “retro”, I will optimistically doubt it would be more boring than what they had for the last few years.

I’m more excited about it being different more than it being retro. It’l be blue and white anyway so I’m not holding my breath.

Wow I was really hoping for something nice, and we got this. I can’t believe this is the livery of a F1 car.

It was the worst looking car last year and I think it will be the same in this one.

    January 31, 2011 at 10:01 pm

I’m torn. I actually think it’s a very neat and classy looking car especially with the red but on the other hand it is way too plain for a formula 1 car.

I’m still hoping for a crazy car from HRT this year. Hopefully it’s going to be absolutely bonkers.

Just repeating what others have said, but Sauber really ruined what was a good opportunity to create a new identity and remove itself from it BMW days completely.

A Telmex influenced livery that complements the lines of the car could have looked great, but this just looks last minute, unfinished and unimaginative.

Actually I really dig the front view and the new nose design, which suits very well in the wide shape.
Given they didn’t want to change the sidepod-design lines, but still get away from the BMW-association, changing the nose accordingly was a smart move.
    Still a big lost opportunity.
