The Top 25 F1 Liveries of All Time : #6

Only people who know me personally, or who’ve paid really close attention to my previous mentions of it on this site, can have expected this one to rank quite so high…

The most recent car to make it onto the list, and perhaps the last time personal preference has meant that an unexpected car has made it in (the top five are, I assure you, all fairly straightforward!) But I’m a real fan of this livery – the way the white is cut into the blue swooping up from the sidepod to the cockpit is smart, although it’s let down slightly by the way the segment on top of the nose is separated from the sides of it – it could do with being one consistent piece, really. What really makes this for me, though, is the addition of the lighter, almost turquoise blue to split the dark blue and white – I think the three colours work beautifully together, and again, it’s just a shame that it’s only used on the sidepod/engine cover section, and not on the nose as well. The “Bud” logo on the airbox looks a bit cluttered, but aside from that the sponsor logos are handled cleanly and smartly, in a uniform colour. I know some might baulk at its presence so high in the list – and higher than so many bona fide classics – but I just have a personal fondness for it, even more so having seen it close-up (see below!) It’s a shame that it was such an unsuccessful season for Williams that they moved away quickly from this particular rebranding – the 2007 livery was still smart, but a bit blander with a higher concentration of white; and while the new car has more echoes of this one, the shade of blue is a bit too dark and the turquoise is sadly missing. Meanwhile, I doubt the 2006 car will be particularly remembered by many – but for me, it’s destined to go down as as much of a lost gem as some of the other cars of old I’ve featured in this list.

My favourite team – Williams, and one of their best liveries, the turquoise blue stripes worked really well, particularly on the team kit. It’s not quite as classy or clean as the 2002-2005 HP livery, but definetely a work of art.

Yeah, the team kit is one of the reasons I like this so much – I REALLY want a 2006 team shirt!

    Oh look, it’s you!

And yes, the car is shiny.

    Love it! Very sexy car!

Hmmm… 5 is straightforward? We haven’t seen a West McLaren yet, the 7Up or Buzzing Hornets Jordan either, and I’m guessing maybe one of the old 80’s Renaults gets a run too?

    Very much enjoying the list!

This one is great indeed. Better than last year’s. Hope they have something more blue this year. Weĺl have to wait and see. Now for the rest of the top5 i’ll say, a West McLaren, a yellow Jordan, a Rothmans Williams, maybe a classic blue and white Ligier or a blue Tyrell perhaps. Maybe a yellow & green Camel Benetton or Lotus have a shot too.
