Haas Make A Haash Of It

Look, F1 teams, we have to talk about this: grey cars simply don’t work. Black, yes. Silver, yes. But grey? The colour of the surface upon which cars run, against which they are photographed (and videos) around 90% of the time that they are in motion? No. It is just about the worst possible colour to run a car in. So why do so many of you keep doing it?

Haas’ first F1 livery wasn’t perfect, but it was a good combination of colours that worked well together, and with a bit more styling and/or a few more sponsors, it could have been significantly improved upon. As it turns out, however, the team have elected to change one of the main colours – and in the process gone backwards.

I can understand the team choosing to move away from silver, given the amount of it already on the grid (although it was a bigger issue last season than this, given McLaren’s switch to orange and black). But I really don’t think this was the way to go, at all. It’s dull, and doesn’t pop out of the track – and it feels like a 2013 Sauber or the 2010 HRT. Or a less metallic version of recent McLarens. They’ve even removed the splash of colour that the US flags gave the sides – changing them to a shade of grey instead.

Plus points? Well, I do like the shade of red they use – it pops out of the car well. And the styling on the shark fin is arguably the best use of that particular aerodynamic feature that we’ve seen from any team so far (although if the teams are so desperate to hide the things, I find myself wondering why they’re even using them at all, as I still don’t get what benefit they actually offer to performance).

But otherwise, this is really not an exciting livery in the slightest, and certainly not worthy of the 🔥🔥 emojis the team heralded its arrival on Twitter with today.

  1. I fully agree with you, the shark fin design is one of the best out there this season, and this livery is really quite dull. This is the American team, I was hoping they’d be a bit more bonkers with the livery :/

If only the shark fin’s livery was the actual livery…

That is good looking car. But it is horrible Formula 1 car. It looks great on white paper, but awful in real life conditions.
Please remove that dust and make it interesting. I usually hate horrible looking black/white striped car with white stars on blue field – but this time that kind of American patriotism would, if well made, be good option.

  4. I like the design of the shark fin and I believe it improves pitch stability at high speed. It’s nice to see the sidepods with decent sponsor logos though, looking at you McLaren.

  5. You never know, they could switch the gray to white like they did last year. I personally like the design of the car.

  6. Sorry to say send that I don’t fully agree with you on the colour. On a grid that will be busy with colour this year I like this. It’s a lot less platicy than last year’s and a lot more gown up.
Love the shark fin but don’t like the nose…What was wrong with last year’s version??

  7. I dont agree with you on the red.Despite it looking good in photos with all the lighting it looks dull while on the track(just look at the leaked picture from the filming day).
