Lucozade Gives You Wings?

March 24, 2012 | No Comments

Well, they’ve now done it for two races, so I think we can assume it wasn’t just a one-off for Australia, and thus it’s worth reporting: McLaren have made a change to their livery, replacing the usual Vodafone logo on the rear wing with that of Lucozade. Interesting.

Obviously, the main point to make about this is that it drastically increases the prominence of Lucozade as sponsor of the team – and, as an energy drink company, this places them in direct competition with Red Bull. Traditionally, the two companies have tended to pitch at different areas of sport – Lucozade, and notably its offshoot brand Lucozade Sport, is much more closely associated with athletic sports, while Red Bull have the market cornered in high-speed, machinery-based events. In this instance, however, they seem to have decided to capitalise on their existing relationship (as already established partway through last season) with a team who now look like a much closer competitor for the Red Bull team than last year – so every win for McLaren over Red Bull can also be seen as a victory for Lucozade over their competitor.

I’d be interested to know, in fact, whether the initiative for this came from Lucozade themselves – and by how much they had to increase their investment to get it – or if it might even have been McLaren’s idea. There’s also the question of whether Vodafone – still very firmly the team’s title sponsors – were happy to give up the valuable rear wing space.

It’s also worth noting that this is possibly the first time since the banning of tobacco sponsorship that two major teams have had similar, competing brands so prominently on their cars – particularly when you roll in the fact that Monster energy drinks sponsor Mercedes (albeit in much less obvious fashion). In the years since the ban (well, not counting Ferrari’s invisible Marlboro sponsorship), we haven’t really had that – and although it’s a telecoms company that are still McLaren’s major sponsor, the increased prominence of Lucozade will surely attract attention. And if Red Bull continue to be beaten by it, as they have been so far this season… well, it could be a very prudent investment indeed.

Williams: BETTER.

Well, this is nice. We haven’t even got as far as the final round of testing yet, and already one of the teams has spotted and improved one of the major problems with its livery. Well done, Williams. Well done indeed.

The nose section hasn’t changed, and could still do with better distribution of white to break it up. But there’s no denying that changing the shape of the white airbox stripe, and adding in the red strip, is a vast improvement.

Thanks to Séamus for the heads-up in the comments to the earlier article!

New Williams shirt offers hints at livery and sponsors

January 17, 2012 | 1 Comment

The announcement today that Bruno Senna is to take up the remaining seat at Williams for 2012 brought with it publicity photos of the Brazilian driver wearing official team gear – and, as can be seen, it’s a brand new shirt:

Strange as it may seem, I reckon there’s a lot that we can take from this pic about how their 2012 car is going to look. Firstly, although similar in style, the shirt is different enough from the 2011 team shirt that it’s clearly not just an old one with a few new logos stitched onto it. We can reasonably assume that this is how Williams’ 2012 gear is going to look.

That in itself, then, would suggest that the car’s livery is going to be blue with red, silver and white hints, as it was in 2011. Chances are, it’ll be very similar if not identical to last year’s. This also means it’s unlikely that the team will be announcing a new major title sponsor to replace AT&T – or if they do, it’ll be one that will fit in with this existing look.

At the same time, it’s not all doom and gloom. The shirt does feature a few more sponsors than appeared last year – aside from Bruno’s personal sponsors Embratel, Gillette seem to be making an appearance as a major sponsor for the first time (I recall them appearing on the Benettons of Berger and Alesi in the late ’90s – not sure if they’ve been in F1 at all since then), and although it can’t be seen in the above pic fellow Procter and Gamble brand Head & Shoulders makes an appearance on the left sleeve.

And of course, from a ’90s purist’s point of view… well, isn’t it nice to see the word RENAULT on Williams gear again…?

F1 Colours – The New Era

January 5, 2012 | 2 Comments

Well. How about this, then?

I was actually going to wait until the site’s fifth birthday, on 12th January, to launch this – but I got everything ready a bit more quickly than anticipated, and couldn’t bring myself to wait an entire week to unleash it on you. So here it is – the brand new F1 Colours, with a brand new home, at f1colours.com.

I just thought it was about time to freshen everything up, make the site look a bit more robust and professional, and future-proof it to allow for possible expansion and growth in the future. After five years, in which you the readers have been a fantastic community and helped the site stay strong with your discussion of my posts, it just felt like it needed – and deserved! – it. But for the moment, aside from the structural overhaul and lick of paint, the site will generally remain the same in terms of outlook and focus – and all the old content and articles remain. I’ll still be most active during the months of January through March, as the F1 teams unveil their new liveries, driver uniforms, helmets and so on. And longer articles, including more entries in the Livery Histories series and guest contributions, will continue to make their every-so-often appearances.

As you can’t fail to have noticed, all of this has been done just in time for launch season – so keep your eye on the site over the next few weeks for the first tricklings-through of 2012 livery and sponsorship news! And don’t forget, you can keep up with my shorter livery-based blatherings – as well as being updated whenever there’s a new post – by following @f1colours on Twitter.

Hope you like the revamped site, and don’t hesitate to tell me what you think!

F1 Colours on Twitter!

February 8, 2011 | No Comments

I really should have thought to do this at the start of the livery launch season, but nevertheless – if you’re Twitter-inclined, you can now follow the site at @f1colours. As well as keeping you informed about when the site’s updated, I’ll also use the account to post smaller livery and sponsorship-related comments throughout the season that might not necessarily warrant a full post. And I look forward to chatting with any site regulars who also use the site!

New Mercedes?

January 30, 2011 | 8 Comments

Looks like German newspaper Bild have stolen a march on the planned Tuesday launch of the new Mercedes Petronas – posting a picture of what appears to be the car, resplendent in its 2011 livery. And, in a pleasing development, the team do appear to have made some changes:

There’s no real reason to suspect this is phoney – if it is, someone’s done a good job of ensuring that the details we’d know would change (race number, Pirelli badge) are present, and it also contains new detail (the front-of-sidepod sponsor) that wouldn’t necessarily be expected by anyone creating a mockup. So on the assumption that it’s real… well, I like it. It integrates the Petronas turquoise into the livery far better than the 2010 car did – their logo looks significantly better in white text on a full turqoise background rather than black text with a wishy-washy splash of it underneath. Indeed, the colours complement each other well enough that it’s a surprise they didn’t go with this bold an application last year. Nevertheless, it’s a strong evolution of the team’s image, and when we see it properly should make for a good-looking car.

Thanks to Ned Flanders of this parish for the heads-up!

Update: The picture’s veracity has been confirmed by Mercedes, who’ve released a higher-res version (now above), which also turns out to be a rendering rather than a photograph.

I know Lotus, and you, sir, are no Lotus

Right, then. You could all probably imagine I was going to comment on this at some point. So. Here is a picture of a potential 2011 livery (although, as I’ll explain, I don’t believe it’s actually going to run next year) for the Team Formerly Known As Renault:

Back to Black for Lotus

November 11, 2010 | 10 Comments

Well, this is interesting. As regular readers will know, I’m a huge, huge fan of the 2010 Lotus livery – I think it’s the best one not only on this year’s grid, but quite possibly on any year’s grid for the last decade. So I can’t really see any reason for them to want to change it any time soon. But they can.

In a move that is certain to excite Lotus fans and followers of Formula One™ around the world, Lotus Racing has announced this morning that its cars will be running in a black and gold colour scheme from the 2011 Championship onwards.

Ferrari remove barcode!

May 6, 2010 | 18 Comments

BUS-TED!!

I suspect they wouldn’t have been so quick to do this if they didn’t already have Santander splashed across the rear wing (and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Spanish bank make it on to the engine cover before too long), but this is as close to an admission of “Yeah, alright, you got us” as you’re ever going to get from the Scuderia.

Got to reproduce this final parting shot from them, though, as it might just be the funniest moment of the whole “saga”:

Together with Philip Morris International we have decided to modify the livery of our cars starting with the Barcelona Grand Prix.

This decision was taken in order to remove all speculation concerning the so-called ‘bar code’ which was never intended to be a reference to a tobacco brand.

By this we want to put an end to this ridiculous story and concentrate on more important things than on such groundless allegations.’

I mean… if the barcode had nothing to do with Philip Morris, then what exactly, pray tell, did they have to do with the decision?

Cracking stuff.

Barcode Battlers

May 4, 2010 | 3 Comments

Greetings, F1 Colours readers! I know we’ve entered the typical “livery launches out of the way, season started” lull that this site has, but seeing as sponsorship and liveries have – in a rare move – made it into F1 news lately, I really couldn’t sit back and comment as about the only blog dedicated to the subject. So here’s my take on this whole “the Ferrari barcodes have nothing to do with Marlboro” nonsense.

In case you’ve missed it, the basic gist is this – UK newspaper The Times recently ran a report on something that those of us who’ve followed F1 since the late ’90s or earlier have known for years: that the “barcode” pattern on Ferrari’s cars is a cunning way of masking the fact that they still receive sponsorship money from Marlboro, despite the fact that tobacco advertising in F1 was outlawed entirely in 2007. Laughably, Ferrari – sorry, “Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro”, to give them their full, officially-registered title – president Luca di Montezelmolo has since claimed that:

It is verging on the ridiculous to claim that the colour red or a graphic design which shows a barcode could induce people to smoke.

While an official statement from Ferrari claimed that:

The bar code is part of the livery of the car, it is not part of a subliminal advertising campaign.

All of this shows remarkably short memories on the part of Ferrari personnel. So in order to explain why people might possibly think that a red and white and black bar code logo has anything to do with Marlboro, let’s give them a bit of a history lesson…
