Livery Histories #5: Minardi

Possibly the most beloved backmarker team of all time, and one for whom the word "plucky" was invented, Minardi's twenty-year history in F1 saw them carve out a distinctive visual identity in their early days, before spending much of the 1990s beholden to the whim of a succession of different sponsors as they struggled to raise enough cash to keep going; and then finally taking on a new guise in the early 2000s under the European Aviation-backed ownership of Paul Stoddart... 2014 Liveries: The Verdict!

After a somewhat disappointing 2013, there have at least been a handful of significant changes to the 2014 livery portfolio - including one brilliant new addition. Some teams could still do with freshening things up a bit more - and a certain Woking-based squad really need to get their act together - but in general the grid looks a bit more interesting, compared to last year, than 2013 did compared to 2012. As per usual, then, let's go through one by one and rate the cars! [Read More]

2013 Liveries: The Verdict!

2010 feels so long ago, doesn't it? A few short years after one of the best livery seasons in living memory, we're now at a stage where almost every car's look can be, in the main, predicted weeks before launch. There are still a few decent liveries on the grid, but in general there's a quite "samey" feel to proceedings, and a disappointing general lack of good colour. Anyway! Lamenting aside, let's have a look at how all the cars from 2013 stack up alongside one-another... [Read More]

Livery Histories #4: Arrows

One of F1's most venerable pub quiz answers, Arrows Grand Prix (also known at various times as Footwork Arrows and TWR Arrows) are most famous as being the team to have competed in the most races without winning one - competing 382 times between 1978 and 2002 without ever putting a driver on the top step. At the time of their demise, the team had one of the most noteworthy liveries in F1, courtesy of their dramatic and memorable Orange-sponsored scheme - although it had been diluted somewhat by secondary sponsors by this point, as we'll see. But it was just one of a line of varied and often inspired designs the team employed in their lifetime, showing that what they lacked in race-winning craft, they frequently made up for in livery quality... 2012 Liveries: The Verdict!

A change in format for the annual livery review this year, as I've decided to go through each team and award a rating out of five based on four distinct categories, giving a total score out of 20 to determine in truly scientific fashion which is THE BEST... [Read More]

Fantasy 2012 Grid

As someone who runs a site whose main purpose is to sit here and critique the livery designs of other people, there's a reasonable question that could be put to me - "Well, what would you do differently?" So for once, I've decided to put my money where my mouth is - and come up with a set of liveries for the 2012 teams that I would like to see out there... [Read More]

2012 Livery Speculation

I’ll be honest with you upfront: this isn’t going to be the most interesting year for this. Remember back in 2010, when we had all the new teams coming in but didn’t know what most of them were going to look like? Ah, happy days. Skip forward to 2012, however, and it’s a [Read More]

Livery Histories #3: Benetton

The third of our Livery Histories looks at a team that were close to my heart in the mid to late ’90s – Benetton Formula. The team didn’t win a lot of friends in the early ’90s, thanks to a series of controversies including the “poaching” of Michael Schumacher [Read More]

Class of 2011: The Helmets

Each year, once the teams’ liveries have been rounded up, I’ve meant to do a post about the drivers’ helmets as well, and never got around to it. Well, SHOCK HORROR: for 2011, I’ve finally done it. I’m not as into helmet liveries as I am those of the cars, but [Read More]
