1999: West McLaren Mercedes

1997 was the year this scheme took F1 by storm, and 1998 was the year it won its first title. But 1999 was when it looked its best. The lines of the Adrian Newey-designed car had become increasingly sculpted, and it felt like the livery and car were working in harmony together – they’d done so in 1998, too, but it was even more the case in ’99. It looked better with a 1 and a 2 on it than a 7 and 8, too.

  1. If the 555 side of the BAR-Supertec had been allowed to be the Zonta car, that would probably have won. I still think it’s the best 555 car around, rally or F1.
